Books are checked out to library patrons at the 1st-floor Circulation Desk. To check out materials from Vaughn Library, a patron must present one of the following.

  • Current TJC student ID card
  • Current Vaughn Library Courtesy Card
  • Current TJC Faculty/Staff ID card
  • Current TexShare library program card

Books are checked out to faculty, staff, students, and community users for a three-week period with an optional 1-week renewal. TJC students are limited to four books per subject category with 12 books being the maximum number checked out.

Nonstudents (which would include Vaughn Library Courtesy Cardholders or TexShare cardholders) may check out a total of two books at any one time for a three-week period with an optional 1-week renewal.

TJC faculty and staff may check out up to 20 books at a time for 3 weeks with a 1-week renewal.

Library items may be returned at the Circulation Desk, in the book drop on the library’s front porch, or in the book drop at the curb of the student parking lot on the west side of Rogers Student Center. All boxes are emptied daily.

Checkout Procedure

Materials to be checked out should be taken to the Circulation Desk where the patron must present an appropriate ID card. If a hold has been placed on that patron’s record, the patron must clear the hold before checkout can proceed.

Vaughn Library Courtesy Cards will be issued to qualified community users. Special patron passes will be issued upon the recommendation of the college president or the Director of Library Services. All such courtesy cardholders will be limited to checking out two items at any one time.

In keeping with the open-door policy of Tyler Junior College, the use of library facilities without checkout privileges is extended to the general public; however, children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Overdue Charges:

Overdue materials are charged at the following rates:

  • Regular circulating materials: 25¢ per day per item up to a maximum of $10.00 or the cost of replacement per item
  • Reserve materials: $2.00 per day per item to a maximum of $50.00 or the cost of replacement per item
  • Fines totaling under $5.00 will be collected on a case by case basis.
  • After receiving 3 fines, students will be liable for the amount of the fine no matter the charge.
  • Lost materials: see Lost or Damaged Replacement Policy

Library Holds:

Unpaid fines or overdue materials will cause a hold to be placed on that patron’s record. Such holds block the patron from checking out other library materials or, if a TJC student, from getting a transcript. Contact the Circulation Desk in person or by calling 903-510-2502 for questions about any fines or holds.

TexShare is a cooperative program designed to improve library service to students, faculty, and staff of Texas institutions of higher education. TexShare libraries adopt a common goal of promoting and facilitating access to information, communications, and scholarly research among their university communities, and many extend free reciprocal borrowing privileges to each other’s students, faculty, and staff. The TexShare Card Program allows students, faculty and staff of participating TexShare institutions to have direct, personal access to library materials not available at the home institution.

TexShare Library Card holders are allowed general library circulation privileges excluding Interlibrary Loan. Items which do not circulate include periodicals, reference books, vertical file materials, archival materials, and most audiovisual materials. Reserve materials may be checked out and used within the library with proper identification. Privileges will be suspended for non-return of materials by the due date or by failure to pay fees.

Vaughn Library participates in and honors all valid TexShare Library Cards. TexShare Library Card participants from other libraries must present a picture I.D. as well as fill out a Vaughn Library Courtesy Card application. The TexShare Library Card cannot be used by itself to check out items.

Library materials should be returned on or before the due date in person or be postmarked by the due date if returning through first class mail. Book drops are conveniently located on the front porch of the library and at curbside near the Rogers Student Center (west side). Books are collected from book drops at least once daily. TexShare Library Card holders agree to pay charges incurred as a result of late return, damage, or loss of materials. Failure to comply will result in the loss of TexShare Library Card privileges.

If returning by first class mail, address as follows:

Tyler Junior College – Vaughn Library
P O Box 9020
Tyler, TX 75711

UPS/Express Mail should be addressed as follows:

Tyler, TX 75701

An item is considered lost if it is not returned by the end of the semester. There is a $10 processing fee for lost or damaged materials in addition to the cost of the item. If the item is out-of-print, there is an automatic $40.00 replacement fee in addition to the processing fee. If the item is still in print, the replacement cost plus the processing fee will be charged.

A copy machine for books or other library materials is available for use by Vaughn Library patrons. A plain-paper copier is located on the library’s first floor to the left of the main staircase.

Printing Policy

TJC recently switched to PaperCut, a new print management system. Students must set up a print management account before printing. There is a kiosk on the library’s first floor where patrons can either feed in cash (coins or paper currency) or use their debit or credit card to add money to their account. Check with the Office of Technology Services (OTS) staff stationed near the laptop computers on the first floor for instructions on how to set up your new account.

New print stations are set up around the library in order to better serve our patrons. Patrons can walk up to any print station, swipe their TJC ID card or key in their A#, and choose which print job to release for printing. Printing costa are 10 cents per page for black and white copies, and 75 cents per page for color copies.

NOTE: The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. The person using this equipment is responsible for any infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

InterLibrary Loan (ILL) is a free service offered to students, faculty, and staff. If Vaughn Library does not have a copy of a particular book, click on the link to take you to the ILL request form. Fill in the fields for requesting a book and follow the online instructions to submit your request. Book requests can take up to three weeks to fulfill. Vaughn Library will notify the requestor that the book is available for pick-up at the Circulation Desk. The patron must make sure to bring the ILL book back by the date indicated on the front sleeve placed on the book.

If you wish only a few pages from a book, indicate that on the form. This will significantly speed up the filling of your request in that the specified pages can be scanned and emailed to your specified email address – usually within 3-5 days.

If you wish to request an article from a magazine/journal, fill in the pertinent fields. Many times, your request for an article can be filled within 48 hours. If you give a valid email address (one that you frequently check), the article can be emailed directly to your preferred email address.

All InterLibrary Loan requests are subject to any and all copyright restrictions. For questions regarding InterLibrary Loan, contact Lilly Smith at 903-510-2645 or lsmi2@tjc.edu.

Students have access to approximately 60 computers in the library for student use on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Technical Assistance Center is located on the first floor to help anyone needing assistance with the computer access, printing, a password reset, access to the TJC wireless network, or other technical questions.

The Vaughn Library has textbooks available to students. These textbooks can be used by students for a two-hour period within the confines of the library. Reserved textbooks cannot be removed from the library.

To request a textbook, students need to visit the Circulation Desk with their Student ID.
