Succeed at TJC

We’re here to help students develop a degree plan that matches educational and career goals, recommend student resources, and assist with transfer or graduation questions.

Welcome to Academic Advising

Advisors help you define, plan and achieve your academic and career goals. Visit with an advisor from your area prior to registering for classes. Our academic advisors are trained to help you select your classes and get the schedule that fits your lifestyle.

While we hope to help students self-advise when possible, an advising session is required or recommended if:

  • You are a first time in college student
  • You have less than a 2.0 cumulative GPA and on Academic Probation or Suspension
  • You are within one semester of graduation or transferring to a four-year university
  • You need to change your major
  • You have an advising hold
  • You need assistance with self-registration

Pre-Academic Advising Checklist

While academic advising always looks forward to meeting with prospective and current TJC students, there are some steps you can complete to optimize your academic advising experience.

1.  Apply for Admission to TJC

  • If 21 years old or under, submit Proof of Meningitis or waiver.
  • Interested in a tour of campus?

2.  Fill out your FAFSA

  • TJC General Scholarship application opens October 1 through April 1.

3.  Apply for Housing (if staying in dorms)

4.  Submit Official Transcripts

  • Submit official high school transcript (w/ graduation date posted) to Admissions.
  • Submit official college transcripts (if you have Dual Credit or transfer coursework) to the Office of the Registrar.

5.  Take the TSI unless exempt

6.  Visit with an advisor as a walk-in or conveniently schedule an appointment.

  • Please note Zoom appointments are limited to TJC Students only, but prospective students are always welcome via walk-in during regular business hour

You’re encouraged to seek advising early in the semester prior to registration. That way you’ll know what classes you need, have any advising holds removed, and you can register for those classes before they reach capacity.

  • Fall & Summer Semesters: January–March
  • Spring & Winter Semesters: September–October

All incoming freshmen are encouraged to see an advisor during New Student Orientation.

Prerequisites for each class can be found at the end of the TJC Catalog. They can also be found by clicking on the course in Apache Access as you are searching or registering for classes. Degree Works can also provide that information.

Our catalog is conveniently located online. We no longer offer printed versions of our catalog.

If you have not been accepted to TJC, or have not attended TJC in the past, you do not have an A-Number, or student ID number. You will need to apply and be accepted before you will receive an A#.

If you have been accepted to TJC, or have attended TJC, you do have an A-Number. There are several places where you can find your A#:

  • If you have recently received an acceptance letter, your A-Number will be on that acceptance letter.
  • If you have a student ID, your A# is on your student ID (note: if your ID says “Apache ID”, and the number starts with a ‘9’, the ‘9’ is not part of your A-Number. For example, if your ID says “912345678”, your A-Number is actually “A12345678”)
  • You may also contact or visit the Admission’s office on the first floor of WASC, or by phone at 903-510-2200. You must be able to provide a form of identification to receive your A-Number.

At present, students are only able to declare one major at a time while taking course work at Tyler Junior College. Assuming that you are an admitted student at TJC, you can perform a “What-If” analysis using your Degree Works account within Apache Access to assess how changing your major from one major to another will affect your rate toward degree completion or transfer, whichever happens to be your goal.

Yes, walk-in students need to be prepared to wait for the next available advisor. During peak times close to registration opening or ending, financial aid suspensions, etc. wait times may increase. Please call ahead at 903-510-3287 to verify that an academic advisor for your major is available to visit with you.

If you have a Business Service, Campus Safety or transcript hold on your file, a transcript request will not be completed on your behalf. In addition, you will be unable to view or print your unofficial transcript through Apache Access.

  • Advising Hold: New students must meet with an Academic Advisor for help registering for their first semester. Please visit Academic Advising.
  • Bad Address Hold: Submit a Change of Address form to correct or confirm the address on your account.
  • Business Service Hold: You owe a balance to TJC. Please review and pay this balance through Apache Access or with the Cashier’s Office.
  • Campus Safety Hold: This may mean you have a parking ticket or other business with Campus Police. Please contact Campus Police Administration: 903-510-2258.
  • Financial Aid Exit Counseling Hold: Please complete Student Loan Exit Counseling. Holds will be removed automatically in 24-48 hours.
  • Immunization – Meningitis Hold: Submit your bacterial meningitis vaccination record: tjc.edu/vaccination.
  • Transcript Hold: A high school or college transcript from your previous institution(s) has not been received. Please request an official transcript from institution(s) listed on the hold. TJC allows for one (1) academic semester of enrollment while waiting on the official transcript(s); however, students will be unable to register for the following semester or obtain a TJC transcript until all official transcripts are received.

TJC Redshirt Frequently Asked Questions

TJC’s Academic Advising Department receives many questions about the available Redshirt Athletic Program and the details.  This page is intended to provide more information as this program factors into many potential student’s decisions to attend TJC.  After reading this, if you have additional questions that are not referenced, please feel free to share them via our Academic Advising Text Line at 903-231-7121.

We love that many potential or current TJC students are interested in athletics either as a primary goal or potential extracurricular activity and know this is an important aspect of students’ academic consideration and journey.  When available, Redshirt Athletic Programs allow students to take Kinesiology classes, some of which are taught by coaches or assistant coaches, and to remain informed about potential opportunities to try out for a team.

Currently, the only two available Redshirt Athletic Options are:

  • Football
  • Men’s Basketball

Redshirt classes are offered at the start of each Fall and Spring term. To register for these Kinesiology classes, students must have completed the admissions onboarding process and be eligible to register for classes.  At that time, the student will share with their academic advisor their interest in participating in Redshirt and the academic schedule will be developed.

Since many students and families will decide to invest substantial time and finances into deciding to pursue the Redshirt program in the hopes of securing a place on a team, we want to ensure a complete understanding of what the Redshirt Athletic Program really means before fully committing to TJC.  While we know many hopeful student-athletes desire to make the TJC team, then go to a Division 1 school, and potentially then possible professional opportunities, the fact is such a small percentage of those students make it to any of these options.  However, achieving a wonderful life through focusing on the right academic major is something available to all students.

Here are the most common FAQs we hope will help with this decision-making process:

No, the Redshirt program is designed to be a semester or two-long tryout for prospective student-athletes to earn their way on the team potentially.  Students must have the necessary physical talent and remain in good academic standing for consideration.  Academics should be the primary focus, with athletics being secondary.  There have been many students who have the talent but do not focus on academics, so they are not eligible to be considered.  If you are a transfer student, you must also be in good academic standing from the institution you are transferring from for eligibility consideration.

Yes, for the sports offering, it is each Fall or Spring. However, this is not recommended for students who do not have experience playing the sport of interest.

Although there are many success stories of student-athletes from the Redshirt program playing for the TJC Football Apaches and beyond, less that 10% of those involved in the Redshirt program end up on the team.  For Basketball, this percentage is even less.  TJC’s Athletic Department works very hard year-round to locate and recruit the best potential student-athletes based on a combination of talent and evidence of academic success

Students are put through a variety of speed, endurance, strategy, and mental exercises to see if they are fit to be considered as additions to the team of interest. Again, students must focus on doing well academically and maintain at least a 2.0+ GPA at TJC. For basketball, the Redshirt class is offered in an 8-week format. For football, the class is 16 weeks.

No, Redshirt students are not part of the team and are considered part of the general student population. Redshirt students would have to apply for general housing like any other student until such a time they are officially part of a team

No, Redshirt students are part of the general student population and can apply for the annual TJC scholarship if open, utilize federal financial aid, military benefits if eligible, or third-party scholarships to help fund their education and expenses while attending TJC

The best source for purely athletic questions can be found at: https://www.apacheathletics.com/landing/index

Thank you for taking the time to review this information, and we hope it helps with your decision to join TJC.  We look forward to having you as a student first and potentially as a student-athlete.  For additional related questions, feel free to text our Academic Advising Text Line at 903-231-7121.
